Why live in Fairbanks?
Fairbanks Alaska has a rich heritage, a strong native culture, and with a population of over 82,000 and climbing, it’s no wonder why more and more people are calling this unique city home.
Summer brings 24 hours of sunshine with temperatures in the 70’s & 80’s. Boating, fishing, camping, hiking and golf can all be enjoyed around the clock. In the Winter when temperatures drop, the breathtaking Northern Lights illuminate the skies. Activities such as skiing, dog mushing, the International Ice Sculpture Contest and snow machining are in full swing. Fairbanks has a low crime rate, good student-to-teacher ratios, and no traffic gridlock.
Here’s just a sample of what Fairbanks has to offer...
Affordability — The cost of living is lower than most other Alaskan communities.
Housing — Inexpensive, quality homes can be found throughout the area with a wide variety of options from rustic cabins to million dollar mansions.
Education — The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District includes 22 elementary schools, 6 middle schools and 6 high schools with a total enrollment of over 14,000. Demonstrating the community’s support for first class education, test scores for Fairbanks students are considerably higher than the national average.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks campus offers many opportunities for higher-level education. Their Engineering, Business, and Biology departments are nationally recognized for excellence.
Heathcare — The Fairbanks Memorial Hospital is a state-of-the-art medical facility with a Mental Health Wing, Cancer Treatment Center and the Denali Center (an Extended-Care Facility).
Climate — Most of the year Fairbanks is under sunny skies with four, well-defined seasons. Warm summer days are offset by cool winter nights. The Brooks Range protects the city from Arctic winds and the Alaska Range holds back the wet coastal weather. The summers are beautiful and the winters are far less intimidating than their reputation.
Recreation — A variety of outdoor activities abound: hunting, sport and ice fishing, hiking, camping, skiing, boating, public dog mushing trails and summer gold panning. Indoor activities include: hockey, ice skating, swimming, curling, bowling, family billiards, and fitness centers.
Arts — Concerts, plays, musicals, dancing, fill the calendar year 'round, complimented by outdoor theater and the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival.
Events — Highlights of the year are the Yukon Quest Dog Race, World Ice Art Championships, Festival of Native Arts, Midnight Sun Street Festival, and the Tanana Valley Fair which features vegetables and flowers that grow to Alaska-sized proportions with 24-hours of daylight (see photo of 12 inch Dahlia to the right).
