WIC WEEK - JoHannah Hendrickson Messina

Meet JoHannah Hendrickson Messina — Sheet Metal Shop, Journeyman - Fairbanks, AK

Q&A

How did you get into the industry?

JoHannah's journey into the trades was influenced by her family connection to Holaday-Parks. With both her brother and uncle previously working at HP, she had early exposure to the company and its culture. Undeterred by growing up in a challenging environment in Alaska—her family did not have amenities like running water and electricity— JoHannah learned the values of hard work, perseverance, and resilience from a young age. Raised alongside her brothers, she experienced firsthand the importance of teamwork and shared responsibility within her family. Their involvement in gold mining further instilled a strong work ethic and a sense of unity as they all contributed to the family’s success. JoHannah's dedication and determination throughout life eventually led her to a crossroads and, ultimately, to her career at HP.

Reflecting on her upbringing, JoHannah expresses gratitude for the challenges she faced, believing that they have shaped her into a resilient and tenacious individual who can overcome obstacles and achieve goals.

Share a Memory in Your Career

One of the most memorable moments in JoHannah's career was when she worked alongside her brother. They were tasked with forming bands that encircled the Alaska Pipeline—a critical infrastructure project. Despite the seriousness of the task, JoHannah and her brother added an element of excitement to their work by turning it into a friendly competition. Each time they started the job, they would both race against each other to see who could finish first. It was so much fun! The combination of teamwork and adrenaline, all surrounded by the breathtaking Alaskan landscape, made the experience an unforgettable one.

What Advice would you give a woman entering the industry?

JoHannah says to, “keep it simple”. Often, when starting out in a new field or learning new concepts, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and to overthink things. When you keep it simple, focus on the basics, and don’t overcomplicate, you can reduce stress, think more clearly, and make better decisions.

What is the best part of your job?

JoHannah says the best part of her job is the sense of satisfaction that comes from contributing to projects and her community. Knowing that her work directly impacts communities, improving their quality of life, is deeply rewarding for her. Also, the financial aspect of the job is another positive aspect. The construction industry offers competitive pay, which provides stability and support for her and her family.

How can construction attract more female candidates?

To attract more female candidates, JoHannah says it’s important to start at home and how children are educated and exposed to different career paths. By encouraging girls from a young age to explore and consider careers in construction, we can break down traditional barriers and open up opportunities for them in this field.

JoHannah's own experience as a mother of two daughters highlights the impact of upbringing and exposure on career choices. She is making sure they both have an equal chance to pursue their passions and thrive in any industry they choose.

What motivates you to work hard?

JoHannah’s commitment to perseverance and her determination to “outwork” everyone else is what motivates her. She understands that in competitive environments, such as the construction industry, employers often prioritize their top performers during challenging times. She gets great satisfaction knowing she gives her all to her work while creating the job security she needs.

What is your favorite piece of construction equipment?

JoHannah appreciates a wide range of construction equipment, finding joy and excitement in each type. However, if she had to pick favorites, it would likely be equipment that allows for precision and intricate work, such as plasma cutters, old brakes, and water jets used for fine details. She is known for her creative intricate metalwork—samples below.
